Some times we may want to refer a specific part of a large document several times. A computer monitor gives us only a finite space for working on various applications. Due to this reason we have to do a lot of vertical scrolling when dealing with a large document. . In the case of Excel we have a feature to freeze the rows and columns. Now this feature has been incorporated in Microsoft Word too.

Consider a case where we have a figure, a chart, a graph, or just some text which needed to be referred to while drafting the remaining document. Instead of scrolling to and fro through the document we can freeze the required part, while working on the remaining portion of the document.
The steps for this is
1) Click the View tab in Microsoft Word 2007 ribbon menu.
2) Now click on the Split Window icon after keeping the split bar just below the portion which is to be kept static. Split window feature allows viewing different portions of the same window at the same time.

3) The document will be split into two panes and you can work on one pane keeping the other one static for reference. For example in the figure given the top pane with the chart is static and the bottom pane is used as the work area.

4) You can click on each pane and can use the View commands for modifying the view or the layout. For example the top pane can be kept in the Print layout, while you can work on the bottom pane in the Web layout. You can treat the two panes like two separate windows. 5) Split window can be changed back by double clicking on the split bar or by clicking on the Remove Split icon.
