Samsung Star S5230 Review

by Nick | 8:45 AM in , , |

Samsung S5230 comes with the latest multimedia features in a slim and compact body that measures a mere 11.9mm. Adopting a 3.0-inch WQVGA full-touch screen and Samsung’s TouchWiz User Interface with Mobile Widgets, the phone enables its users to enjoy their mobile easily and intuitively. Using “Photo Contact,” users can call a contact by simply touching an appointed image.

Specifications:

  • 3 inch touchscreen bar phone
  • 3.2 MP camera w/o flash
  • 262K Color TFT Screen
  • GPRS
  • EDGE
  • Bluetooth
  • Music player
  • FM
  • 100 MB internal memory
  • Memory card slot for upto 8gb cards
  • JAVA™ MIDP 2.0
  • Document viewer (Doc, Ppt, Xls, Pdf)
  • Mobile Tracker
  • 1000mAh battery
  • 92g weight and the rest of the usual features like SMS, MMS, calculator etc.

Accessories:

Headset, charger, USB cable, Stylus, Samsung New PC Studio CD, one normal rear cover and one plastic/leather rear cover with front flaps

Main review

The phone is a a good looking device featuring a generous 3 inch body with touchscreen for user input. There are only six physical buttons namely Call, End Call/Operation, volume up and down, camera, and lock/unlock phone. The main display is bright and features the basic details like battery level, time, connection strength and also the much hyped about but generally useless widgets.

  • The touch interface is itself quite easy to use. It is smooth and and does its job quite well. Scrolling up and down is although much easier with the volume keys than with the touch interface.
  • Call quality is good and even when signal strength drops the call is not cut off and voice clarity remains. But call volume is not very high even when using the headset. Only FM Radio and music player volume go to Level '14'; call volume and phone sounds' volume go to only level '7'.
  • There are default wallpapers each of which contain 3 pictures and this can be scrolled left or right to change into any one of the 3 pictures. This works well with the default wallpapers of Samsung but when you see your own wallpapers showing only 1/3rd in the screen you'll realize its a foolish design decision on the part of the developers.
  • The camera is pretty good and night shot come out rather well.
  • The music initially sounded a little hollow but somehow after a few days it sounds better. The headset is pretty good and volume levels are acceptable.
  • FM was iffy. Maybe the phone's positioning wasn't great.
  • Connection on the USB to the PC is very fast and although the bluetooth is also 2.1 version you'll find yourself using the USB cable only to transfer files.
  • On the security front you have Mobile Tracker technology and you can password protect various parts of the phone like Messaging, phonebook, your files, SIM card etc.
  • Messaging is a dream. You can use the standard keypad or you can tilt the phone horizontally and use the QWERTY keypad. You can also use the stylus to write your own message but handwriting recognition is very poor. I tried writing "8" 10-15 times and then only its managed to recognize it.
  • A smart unlock feature lets you make a symbol on the phone's screen (even if phone is locked) and if that symbol is a assigned to a person the person is called, if the symbol is assigned to an application then that application opens.
  • Browing on the net is definitely fast. It loaded the PC version of sites vey fast with the default browser also. Moving around the websites using the touch interface is very fast, unlike document viewing. Clicking on the links is a little tough without the stylus. Also, every few minutes links don't open even after clicking on them repeatedly. Then you have to either restart the default browser or wait till a "No Response" message comes. In Opera Mini I didn't find this issue.
  • There are a few preloaded games which are pretty fun to play.
  • Document viewing is a letdown. You move around the document with your fingers but its very slow and you'd be barely using the useful stylus because of another bad design decision; the stylus is not fitted into the phone's body.
  • Battery wise I was not convinced by the 13 hour advertised battery talktime and in the first few days I used it so heavily that I was charging the phone everyday. But from the fourth day onwards I am using it moderately and seems like it will go on for 3-4 days on a single charge. 4 hours video playback, 4-5 hours calls, 1 hour music playback, 20-30 minutes of GPRS/Edge and it lasted for two days.
  • Video player is good. The Samsung New PC Studio software converted some video files and transferred them to the phone. The files played smoothly and were of high video and sound quality. 700 MB files when converted to 500 Mb mp4's played with good video quality on the phone. Video details are: 320x240 resolution, 1200 Bits/sec, 15 fps, MP4
  • Photo gallery is so awesome!!!!! Besides, it opens up 2-3 MB photos with ease.
  • File management could be much better. If you put 500 wallpapers in one folder then god help you if you want to see the wallpaper whose filename starts with "Z".
  • Phone hangs often after a call when I pressed call end button. Also, when giving a missed call to a person, sometimes I am unable to end the call. The only solution was to restart the phone. This has happened six times

Advantages
  • Display quality
  • Call quality
  • Good touch interface
  • Battery (lasts 2 days with moderate to heavy use)
  • Music and video player does its job
  • Camera quite good
  • Web browsing (even if its w/o 3G or WiFi)
  • 8GB memory card support (am using a Sandisk 8GB microSD card right now)
  • Messaging a pleasure
  • Games are fun
  • Samsung New PC Studio s/w works well with the phone
  • Price

Disadvantages
  • Cannot view SMS's while on a phone call. Can only write SMS's and emails during calls
  • Document viewing is a pain
  • Stylus cannot be attached to the phone's body
  • File Manager can be much better
  • Have to buy a separate screen guard as default one already is on its way out when you're buying the phone
  • Handwriting recognition
  • Design decision related to wallpapers in topmost screen
  • Call volume could be higher
  • Memory card not hot swappable
  • Default browser link clicking is a bit iffy.
  • No 'Back' button in the touch interface
  • Phone hangs while ending a call/missed call
Video Review

Useless
  1. Photo Contacts
  2. Widgets
  3. Smart Unlock

Price of phone:

Rs. 9500 (w/o memory card)

It's easy to get excited Sony delivers one of its many super-expensive ultra-portables, like the VAIO TT or Z Series, to our door, but in the past its mainstream laptops have been a little hit and miss. For all the lustre and acclaim its VAIO brand engenders in consumers, the reality isn't always the all singing, all dancing computing experience people imagine. However, in the new NW Series, we reckon Sony might have finally the mainstream affordable laptop.

One thing we particularly like about the VGN-NW11S/S we're looking at today is the lack of one material that's so abundant elsewhere: glossy plastic. This is actually true of most of Sony's laptops, making it one of the few manufacturers that hasn't jumped on this particular bandwagon. You still get a glossy display mind, but this is nothing like as irritating as dealing with fingerprints, dust and grease adorning every inch of the chassis.

Instead, Sony has opted for a textured plastic finish - in this instance silver, though a brown version is also available. We dare say it won't be to everyone's taste, but it's very hard wearing and exemplifies the decent build quality seen throughout the machine. There are some nice touches dotted around the NW11, too. Particularly worthy of praise is the touchpad, which comprises a moulded clear plastic plate integrated into the palm rest. Not only does it look rather fetching, its textured surface offers great tactile feedback - the two buttons are very good, too.
Above the touchpad we have the now commonplace isolation keyboard. Sony is the company that started it all, though, so it can hardly be accused of imitation. Initially the white keys appear a bit jarring in contrast to their silver surroundings, but it's a foible one quickly gets over and the keyboard itself is a peach. Keys have a lovely firm responsive action and the layout is perfect - we really can't think of a criticism.

Specification

For storage there's a 320GB, 5,400rpm hard drive, which is about what you'd expect and more than sufficient for most needs. Draft-N Wi-Fi, Gigabit Ethernet and Bluetooth are all present, too, so the NW11S ticks most of the boxes where basic features are concerned. While this version comes with a DVD writer, a Blu-ray ROM/DVD-RW combo drive version is also available, though given the lack of a Full HD display option we'd advise against it unless you absolutely must have Blu-ray. Since we're on the topic of the display, Sony describes this as a 15.5in laptop - not 15.6in like everyone else. We're not sure whether there's a real physical difference or whether Sony is just being perverse (more on the latter), but it has the same 16:9 aspect, 1,366 x 768 native resolution as every other laptop of its type, so the argument is moot. And, while the 'X-Black' finish has always been 90 per cent canny marketing and 10 per cent truth, the NW11 does deliver richer colours and deeper blacks than many. This makes it an above average effort, but on the other hand viewing angles are narrower than some contemporaries, so it's not the best laptop for watching a DVD with a few friends.

If there's a chink in the NW11's multimedia amour, however, it really lies with the speakers. Unlike the similarly priced and featured Dell Studio 1555, the NW11 doesn't have a mid-range woofer, so relies entirely on a couple of largely underpowered speakers. These are passable for the occasional online video and might even suffice for a TV show, but they're too tinny and lacking in body for anything more serious. Typically Sony is just a little more parsimonious (read stingy) than most when it comes to connectivity. To an extent this is true of the NW Series, for instance there's no eSATA and none of the USB ports are ‘sleep & charge' enabled, but overall it serves up all the things most people will need and a few they probably won't. This list includes three USB ports, VGA and HDMI for video, a mini-FireWire port, a 34mm ExpressCard slot and (on the front) memory card slots of Sony's propriety formats and the more common SD format. One unusual addition is a modem connection (just in case), though you get just the two audio jacks - one line-in, one line-out. As we noted earlier, the Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 in the NW11 isn't at the bleeding-edge of Intel's processor range (as the comparison to the Dell Studio 1555 demonstrates), but it's still a very capable performer, scoring over 3,000 in PCMark Vantage. That's a good score for any laptop in this price range and in real-world use any productivity, image editing and multimedia tasks you throw at it should be dealt with smoothly. This includes high-definition video, though editing HD camcorder footage - while still possible - will prove more challenging. Gaming performance is good (particularly for the price), though that's only true of mid-tier titles - the most recent and demanding games will still require significant compromise.
This decent performance is made all the more impressive by the battery life on offer. While the six-cell, 4,400mAh capacity battery isn't a whopper by modern standards, it delivered precisely four hours of use in MobileMark 2007's Productivity segment - extending to an impressive four hours and 34 minutes in the low intensity Reader test. Both these results surpassed the Dell Studio 1555 we reviewed recently, though in the DVD playback test it fell behind with a still creditable two hours and 32 minutes. Given this test is run at 100 per cent screen brightness, reducing this a little will give you enough life to watch most films.

TechFind Says :-

This completes a generally impressive performance from the NW11S. It's not without its faults, it could do with better speakers and an eSATA port wouldn't hurt, but it's fundamentally a very good laptop made all the better by its hard wearing, non-glossy exterior. If you can stretch to it then the Dell Studio 1555, which is more expensive sans its current discounted pricing, is still marginally the better machine, but if not then this will do the job nicely. Verdict

It's not quite perfect, but the NW11S is easily the best mainstream laptop Sony has produced in a long while. It has a nicely balanced specification and feature set, is reasonably priced and won't attract the dust, grease and grime so prevalent on laptops these days.

Techfind proudly presents seminar report on Voice User Interface

::ABSTRACT::

For a voice portal to function, one of the most important technology we have to include is a good VUI (Voice User Interface). There has been a great deal of development in the field of interaction between human voice and the system. And there are many other fields they have started to get implemented. Like insurance has turned to interactive voice response (IVR) systems to provide telephonic customer self-service, reduce the load on call-center staff, and cut overall service costs. The promise is certainly there, but how well these systems perform-and, ultimately, whether customers leave the system satisfied or frustrated-depends in large part on the user interface.

Many IVR applications use Touch-Tone interfaces-known as DTMF (dual-tone multifrequency)- in which customers are limited to making selections from a menu. As transactions become more complex, the effectiveness of DTMF systems decreases.

In fact, IVR and speech recognition consultancy Enterprise Integration Group (EIG) reports that customer utilization rates of available DTMF systems in financial services, where transactions are primarily numeric, are as high as 90 percent; in contrast, customers' use of insurers' DTMF systems is less than 40 percent. Enter some more acronyms. Automated speech recognition (ASR) is the engine that drives today's voice user interface (VUI) systems. These let customers break the 'menu barrier' and perform more complex transactions over the phone. "In many cases the increase in self-service when moving from DTMF to speech can be dramatic," said EIG
president Rex Stringham. The best VUI systems are "speaker

Techfind proudly presents seminar report on Facial Recognition System

::ABSTRACT::

Facial recognition software can be used to find criminals in a crowd, turning a mass of people into a big lineup. The Tampa Police Department was testing out a new technology, called FaceIt, that allows snapshots of faces from the crowd to be compared to a database of criminal mugshots.

The $30,000 system was loaned to the Tampa Police Department for one year. So far, no arrests have been made using the technology. However, the 36 cameras positioned in different areas of downtown Tampa have allowed police to keep a more watchful eye on general activities. This increased surveillance of city residents and tourists has riled privacy rights groups.

People have an amazing ability to recognize and remember thousands of faces. In this edition of HowStuffWorks, you'll learn how computers are turning your face into computer code so it can be compared to thousands, if not millions, of other faces. We'll also look at how facial recognition software is being used in elections, criminal investigations and to secure your personal computer.
